APIAHF Programs

Chronic Diseases Program

AAPI Partnerships

The funding for APIAHF's Tobacco Program, the AAPI Partnership, ended June 30, 2007. We would like to thank all the people and organizations that helped us advocate for smoke-free and healthier Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities since 1990.

During the past fifteen years, APIAHF has been funded by various agencies to address tobacco control within Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities. With funding from the California Department of Health Services’ Tobacco Control Section, APIAHF’s tobacco program that was formerly the Asian & Pacific Islander Tobacco Education Network (APITEN) evolved into the Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Partnership.

After a three-year advocacy campaign targeting Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Pacific Islander churches and faith-based groups throughout California, the AAPI Partnership Advocacy Campaign Consultants and staff were able to secure 18 signed commitments from faith-based organizations across the state to establish smoke-free grounds and/or events.

From this history and experience in tobacco control, the Chronic Diseases Program offered technical assistance and training on a variety of tobacco control issues for health advocates and the community. In addition, the Chronic Diseases Program has developed educational materials to assist tobacco control efforts surrounding faith-based tobacco policies, sponsorship, secondhand smoke, cultural tobacco use, and AAPI data.
